PRESIDENT'S  MESSAGE

We have had an exciting start to the New Year. At our first annual new member meeting held at Exotic Classics in Syosset, we had a record turn out with nearly seventy members in attendance. New members that attended the event included  Lenny Hummel, Manny Aranda, Andy Falsetta, Kenneth Taub, Thomas Lango, Robert J Tanner, Florentina Ion, Herbert  Jaklitsch, Steven Palumbo, Jerry Robinson, Sandy Kane and Arlene Mc Auliffe.

Not only did new members turn out, but some members that attended had been members for years but had never attended an event before!

Exotic Classics is housed in a huge building that is climate controlled and houses at least 100 cars. All of the automobiles are in pristine condition and are for sale. The automobiles spoke for themselves and our members browsed among the them, sitting, standing and photographing them. Our marquee was well represented.

Mercedes-Benz Classic!
SL190 belonging to Member - Jay Goldstein

There was a Mercedes 600 Pullman, two 113's and an

immaculate brown SL190 belonging to Jay Goldstein, one of our members, as well as several
 newer Mercedes including AMG's.

After members signed in they were offered coffee and donuts. Before lunch was served the board was introduced and each member of the board made a brief presentation highlighting some of the privileges of membership. Did you know that if you are a member you can save at least 10% on parts including the Mercedes Benz boutique? If you should break down there is free towing to the nearest Mercedes Benz dealer?

The Exotic Classics event was coordinated by Jan van der Baan and it was a team effort.

 MB Event

Next came lunch. During lunch 50/50 tickets were sold with half of the monies raised going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. There were prizes as well. Some of the prizes were donated by Lakeview Mercedes Benz and others from our members. A Check for $172 was sent to St Jude's.

We have several exciting events coming up. Next month there will be a tech session at Gullwing Motors in Mineola. If you have a question or if you have a problem with your Mercedes you may want to give Lou a call at 516-742-3320.     Perhaps your car can be featured and worked on, on that date. Then in June, the oldest ongoing event of the MBCA will be taking place in Montvale NJ, North American headquarters of MB. There you will see some of the finest Stars in the country. I will be one of the judges as well as Lou Palumbo and Jan van der Baan. Bring your MB and join us. Enter your car. It does not have to be perfect. You can enter it as a daily driver. Join us for lunch and share your MB memories with us. We would love to hear your stories. Other events are in the planning stages. September will be a very busy month for us. On 9/23 we will stage the Legends of the Autobahn event in Westbury Gardens.

I look forward to seeing you and your Mercedes Benz at events this year.

Oliver Seligman

Al Jolson & his Mercedes-Benz
A Christmas Story by John Weigel
On Dec. 4, 2011 the NYC-Long Island Section of M-BCA met at The INN at New Hyde Park for its Annual Meeting/Holiday Party.  Attendees generously donated toys for the John Theissen Children's Foundation (JTCF) marking the fifth consecutive year NYC-Long Island has participated (see photos accompanying this article).Donated Toys The toys were packed and placed appropriately in the cavernous cargo area of an ML350 for delivery to the JTCF Family Center.   JTCF has acknowledged our effort in the thank you letter below this article.

This past December, a Selden home was burglarized and vandalized.  A closet full of Christmas gifts was now barren.  John Theissen (40) hearing of this dastardly home invasion immediately sprung into action.  He personally delivered replacement gifts and a check to pay for damages to the home. John has been performing acts of kindness year round for twenty years with the help of volunteers and organizations such as NYC-Long Island Section of M-BCA.  NYC-Long Island is pleased to be associated with JTCF which has provided direct assistance for sick and needy children. We hope to continue the relationship for at least the next thirty years. Research has confirmed that acts of goodness contribute to longevity.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support.

A Weekend with a New C-ClassClass

by Clark W. Pritchett

At last year's (2010) MBCA Connecticut Westchester Section Holiday (Do I dare say Christmas?) Party at the Red Barn Restaurant in Westport, Connecticut, I was fortunate enough to win the Grand Prize. It was a free weekend in a new C-Class with 250 miles. The prize was donated by Mercedes Benz of Fairfield and presented at the party by2012 C-Class Rodney Hill. My wife, Melodia, and I decided that we would like to use it in the fall when the leaves turned, certainly not in the miserable winter of last year. Terry Doll of MB Fairfield was very agreeable. We scheduled the trip for the weekend that turned out to be the big snowstorm. Looking at the forecast we decided that it wasn't a good idea and postponed the trip until the next weekend. AWD or not, we would have gone nowhere with two feet of snow on the ground! On Saturday morning we arrived at the dealership in Fairfield. Dimitri very professionally handled the paperwork and explained the features of the 2012 (It started out as a 2011 when I won it) C-Class to us. Finally, it was off to explore Northwest Connecticut and the Hudson River Valley.

We took Rt 59 north out of Bridgeport and let the scenery dictate the route after that. There were to be no Interstates on this trip, only the roads between towns on the map in small letters which had state and local roads connecting them. After numerous stops at antique shops, yard sale and barn sales, by late Saturday afternoon we got to Salisbury in Litchfield County and found an excellent little bakery there as well as a boutique food store. As the sun was going down, we left Connecticut and headed to Rhinebeck, New York. The plan was to eat at a good German restaurant but would you believe in spite of the town's name there were no German restaurants there. Instead we found The Tavern at the Beekman Arms (America's oldest operating Inn). The atmosphere was fine and the duck was great. We didn't stay there because there was no room at the inn but stayed at an associated motel just south of town.

The next morning we drove south on US 9 and stopped at Hyde Park and saw the FDR museum but didn't take the tour of the house and grounds (the next trip maybe). Then we stopped at the highlight of the trip for Melodia, the CIA (Culinary Institute of America). The sprawling campus has several very large brick buildings and a number of student housing apartments. The roads had names like Sage and Basil. Unfortunately their restaurant was not open on Sundays. Like General MacArthur, we will return. South of Poughkeepsie we took 9D to stay as close to the Hudson River as we could. At Peekskill we headed east and went back to Connecticut going through Branchville and then heading south on US 7 and ultimately ending up in Fairfield on Sunday night where we stayed. On Monday morning we returned the car to Mercedes Benz of Fairfield and got into our 1997 E-320 and drove back home to Waterford, CT. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend trip but I did learn what I already knew. Free is not free unless you don't eat, drink, shop, visit attractions, sleep or use gasoline.

Comments on the C-Class: The car had 500 miles on it when we got it from Mercedes Benz of Fairfield. I'd forgotten how good it feels to drive a new car since my fleet averages 150,000 miles. The C-Class performed flawlessly on the trip. It was born for the back roads but I'm sure it would do quite well traveling long distances on the Interstates too. Like any Mercedes the seat adjustments had adequate range to make you feel comfortable. Power was good but I never put the hammer down to see how much pop it had. Although we passed near Lime Rock the handling limits were never addressed either. The controls were logical but the Nav system took some getting used to. I did not measure the gas mileage but the gauge did fall faster than I thought it would. Back roads, hills and stop and goes do not good gasoline mileage make. The trunk was OK for a weekend trip but it would not handle the serious luggage of a cross country trip. (That's what the back seat is for.) In summary if you like your Mercedes Benz you will like the new C-Class. It has all of the look and feel that you are used to.

MONTVALE, N.J. - Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported February sales of 19,679 vehicles, a 21.7 % improvement over February 2011 and the highest February volume on record with strong sales across all model lines to brand new customers. On a year-to-date basis, the 41,398 vehicles sold represent a 23.8% increase.

The company reported sales increases over virtually all its model lines from the entry point to the high-end. "With all of our new model launches over the past year bringing new buyers to Mercedes-Benz and prompting our loyal owners to reinvest in the brand, we're ideally positioned to take advantage of the strengthening market," said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of MBUSA.

Sales for the month of February were led by the C-, E-, and M-Class model lines. The sporty C-Class - the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz brand for younger and first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers - took the lead with sales of 5,240 up 17.0% over February 2011. The 9th generation E-Class came in right behind with sales of 4,206 and MBUSA's top-selling SUV, the M-Class, rounded out the top three with sales of 3,408, up 77.1% compared to February 2011.

Other strong performers were the company's flagship S-Class which saw its sales increase by 20.3%, the new CLS up 411.2%, and the SLK roadster which increased 108.8% over February 2011.

Amidst rising gas prices, diesel sales increased to 1,415, up 81.9% over the same period last year (778).

The company's smart brand continued four consecutive months of sales increases versus last year with February sales of 769 vehicles, a 58.9% jump for the month (compared to the 484 vehicles sold in February 2011). The February volume is the highest on record for smart since MBUSA assumed responsibility in July 2011.

On the van side, sales of Sprinter Vans also saw strong sales in February with sales of 830- up 16.6% over last year.

Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 5,985 vehicles in February; a 2.2% increase when compared to February 2011 (sales of 5,859 vehicles). On a year-to-date basis, MBCPO sold 12,930 vehicles, an increase of 5.1% over the comparable period (with sales of 12,302).
